Antifreeze to be bitter to prevent pet deaths:

B.C. aims to prevent accidental poisoning of animals and small children by becoming the first province to require a bittering agent in toxic antifreezes and coolants, the environment minister announced yesterday.

“Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) is not only poisonous, but has a very sweet and inviting taste,” said Barry Penner. “Unfortunately, it makes it very inviting to animals.”

Solving the Mystery of the Vanishing Bees:

The bee loss has raised alarms because one third of the world’s agricultural production depends on the European honeybee, Apis mellifera the kind universally adopted by beekeepers in Western countries. Large, monoculture farms require intense pollination activity for short periods of the year, a role that other pollinators such as wild bees and bats cannot fill. Only A. melliferacan deploy armies of pollinators at almost any time of the year, wherever the weather is mild enough and there are flowers to visit.

World’s tiniest frog species found in Peru:

Rare Fuzzy Rodent also found in Peru:

Found at elevations between 9,449 feet (2,880 meters) and 15,528 feet (4,733 meters) above sea level, the new mouse is unique to some of the world’s highest forests.

Study finds 6,000 rare dolphins off Bangladesh:

“Conservationists claim to have found thousands of rare Irrawaddy dolphins on the Bangladesh coast, but warn that the newly discovered population is under threat from climate change and fishing.”

Identity of mystery ‘elephant angel’ revealed:

The baby elephant, Sheila, was moved out of the zoo over fears for her safety as enemy bombers targeted the city during the Belfast Blitz of 1941.

Grainy photographs of the animal drinking water from a bucket outside a red brick house revealed that she had been offered sanctuary in somebody’s backyard.

However, the identity of the elephant’s saviours was not known because the woman in the photographs could not be identified.

Sick Sea Turtle Swims Right to Florida Hospital Doorstep:

“A sick sea turtle swims to the doorstep of the only place in the world that is licensed solely to treat turtles”

Rescue Critters: Animal Mannequins Teach Veterinary Students About Animal First Aid:

Testing on animals has rightly faced controversy for decades, but that doesn’t change the fact that in order to learn how to medically treat an animal, veterinary students need practice. In order to give veterinary students a safe, humane method to learn their craft, without practicing on someone’s beloved pet; Rescue Critters has created animal mannequins that may look goofy, but mean serious business.

Crustaceans Feel Pain and Remember It:

Turns oot that it is cruel to boil a live lobster after all. These findings are good news for me, because it means that I may finally win arguments with someone I know who’s stomach is bigger than his conscience. Bad news for the sea critters though.

More Elemaphants – Jumbo Air Landing:

Thanks for the tip off Neatorama: “Here is a really neat PSA from the ‘International Fund for Animal Welfare’ from Germany concerning the trafficking and buying of products made from protected and endangered animals such as the Elephant. Air Dumbo now landing!”
