Sunday Religion Roundup
What Do a Rabbit, Colored Eggs and Candy Have to Do With Jesus?:

NY pastor accused of filching funds for Botox:

“He is accused of stealing $84,537 over three years. The money was earmarked for parishioners in need and the upkeep of church grounds.”

I guess he forgot aboot that whole “thou shalt not steal” thing.

Library Pays $45,000 in Anti-Harry Potter Belief Case:

The article describes this case as “religious extremism” and “the hijacking of civil rights laws”, but it sounds like a clear cut case of religious discrimination to me.

“With the ACLU representing her, Deborah Smith alleged she lost her job as a librarian assistant in Poplar Bluff, Mo., because she refused to attend a ‘Harry Potter Night’ promoting the publication of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ in July 2007. Librarians were asked to dress up as wizards for the celebration.”

Supposedly Smith believes the Harry Potter books encourage worship of the occult. At this point I could go on a long tirade aboot what a ridiculous belief that is, but I won’t. Instead I’ll ask, is what she did really so bad? She didn’t organize a book burning. She chose to be somewhere else at that time. Couldn’t the library show a little flexibility?

I guess things would have been easier if Smith’s beliefs were more rational; for example, if she believed in a burning bush that talks.

The Lies of Rick Warren:

It’s like they don’t know how a camera operates. Like they don’t understand that what they say and do is not just going to be a case of “my memory versus your memory”. No, there is actual footage exposing you as a lying douchebag.

Does this happen on the Left? I see it again and again. Some Right Leaning liar tells a lie and immediately gets busted for their stupid lie. This time it’s Rick Warren, and I don’t see what this lie is even supposed to accomplish. No one the Right will approve of his “belief”, and the Left will …. well

John Aravosis @ AmericaBlog handles the issue of supporting California’s prop 8 and equating gay marriage with incest and pedophilia (what, no beastiality?).

Andrew Sullivan @ The Daily Dish also gives us this:

[Warren:]”Not a single criticism came from any gay leader who knows me and knows that for years, we’ve been working together on AIDS issues and all these other things.”

[Sullivan:]Some of us who don’t know you defended your right to give the inaugural invocation. But how can we get to know you when you refuse to meet us in public or private? Pastor Rick, at some point, the vast gap between your words and your actions needs to be filled. The invitation to a public debate on Christianity and homosexuality remains open.

Tony Blair: Pope is wrong about gays – and most Catholics think so too:

The Pope and the Vatican have an “entrenched attitude” towards homosexuality which is less tolerant than the views of ordinary Catholics, Tony Blair says in comments published today.

The former prime minister, who converted to Catholicism shortly after leaving office two years ago, said he disagreed with the Pope’s stance on gay rights and controversially suggested that the Church should reform itself along similar lines to how he re-organised the Labour Party.

The Condom Issue Again:

You know who else disagrees with the pope? Jesus.
