Friday Night

April 11, 2009 at 2:53 am | Posted in Personal | Leave a comment

All is misery and loneliness. I have no reason to be awake. I have no reason to sleep. For eighteen months, I have waited for happiness to arrive and it has not. For six of those months I have tried to find some reason to continue my existence, but none has presented itself.

The only reason that I do not end my miserable existence is that I do not know what lies beyond death. “Aye that is the rub, for in that sleep what dreams may come.”

At the best of times, I am able to delude myself into believing that to exist is better than to not exist. So I continue, hoping an empty hope that someday I will feel something that may be mistaken for happiness.

I now know why men seek the comfort of prostitutes. If I must suffer, perhaps I must not suffer alone.

Good night Internet. Maybe tomorrow I will find some hollow comfort in your distraction.

Scenes from the Vancouver – Street Mosaic, Water Foundation Park, and Street Corner Garden

March 25, 2009 at 8:16 pm | Posted in Personal | Leave a comment

A few days ago I was waiting for the bus at Granville and Cordova and I noticed that there was a nice mosaic on/in the sidewalk. I snapped a couple of pic of it, first facing South, then facing West. Then on the bus ride home, I snapped some pics of Emery Barnes Park and the Davie Street Community Garden. Click on all pics to see larger images.

Downtown Street Mosaic:

A little research on the Interweeble tells me that the name of this Mosaic is Bird’s Eye View

CETA artist Elia Mishkis designed this stunning view to Vancouver Harbour which creates an optical illusion that can be viewed looking skyward or as seen from above. Two common residents – the majestic bald eagle and seagull soar in the centre of the work for a bird’s eye view over Vancouver’s landmark buildings, architecture and views. Included are the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada Place and the Lion’s Gate Bridge with a cruise ship passing below, as well as Gastown’s characteristic street lamps, the railcars and grain elevators – all distinct elements viewed near Vancouver’s harbour.

Emery Barnes Park @ Seymour and Davie

I used to stop in at this park once in a while on the way home from a previous job. It’s a bit small, and a bit noisy being on the corner of two busy streets, but the long fountain that stretches the length of the park makes it nice for walking through.

Davie Village Community Garden

I have mixed feelings about this next one. I love that there is now a huge community garden where a gas station used to be. The problem is though, that there used to be a gas station there, and that could mean trouble for anyone planting food.

Shell Canada conducted tests on the site earlier this year after contaminated soil was dug up and removed to a depth of six metres, but experts are concerned there might be hydrocarbon contamination buried deep down. Hydrocarbons are organic substances found in gasoline. Most sites that were former gas stations are left for five years before they are used for any agricultural purposes, but barely a year has passed since this gas station was torn down.

The Davie Village community garden is on a private lot, so it is not subject to the city’s guidelines for community garden plots. Ron Caswell, manager of golf and park operations for the City of Vancouver, said the Davie Village site is not under city jurisdiction, and he is not aware of city requirements for soil testing on private lots.

Moosey News and Views from Canada

Today’s Top Story: Prince Charles has NOT Abdicated the Throne:

Yesterday while I was hacking the sack with a couple of chums, a passerby asked us if we had heard the news. “Prince Charles has stepped down. He isn’t going to be king; his sister Catherine is going to be the queen. We’re going to be ruled by women.”

Well after extensive research (BBC) it seems that Prince Charles is still in line to saddle up the dinosaur that we call the British Monarchy. Further research (wikipedia) indicates that there is no Princess Catherine, and even further research (common knowledge) reveals Canadians are already “ruled” by women.

But hey, thanks for sharing your delusions Random Stranger. What colour is the sky in your world?

Canada’s Jasey-Jay Anderson wins snowboard gold: No word yet one whether he was high at the time.

Person on Internet Claims VPD Racist Attack:

I don’t know this person. I don’t know if his story is true. I don’t have any particular reason to believe or disbelieve it. What I do know is that if it is true, it should be on more than one blog, so Clickity Click to read the story and take it for what it is.

One Third of Trucks Fail West Vancouver Inspection:

West Vancouver police are once again calling for greater attention to truck safety after a three-day commercial vehicle inspection campaign saw a 34-per-cent failure rate.

Of 74 vehicles inspected from March 10 to 12, 25 were ordered off the road immediately. Defects ranged from faulty brakes to bald tires to poorly secured loads. One heavily laden logging truck had a wheel with six of ten bolts sheared off, according to police. The driver was fined more than $500.

The people’s guide to Canada’s intelligence agencies:

Two Antlers Up! RevDave @ Terrible Depths provide an excellent super awesome introduction to ‘s Intelligence and Security Services.

Canada is relatively blessed in that its intelligence bodies are publicly and legally identified (or at least have been for the last several years), usually have their own websites, and have some fledgling review bodies which can, in theory, hold probing investigations into alleged misdeeds of the services. However, so far as I can tell, there is no easily available source from which Canadians can get information about a secretive sector of government activity that probably now costs us around $1 billion a year. (The total is uncertain because the government does not publish the total figure publicly.)

Given the increased number of controversial incidents regarding both citizens and residents of Canada over the past eight years, I think it is high time that we critically considered what our democratic state is doing with these organizations. Before that, however, people need to understand a bit of context when agencies like CSIS creep into the news with respect to Abousfian Abdelrazik, or Maher Arar. Such incidents are not accidental, one-off accidents, but fit into longer-term trends.

Minority Governments that work:

In a previous post, I asked my BC reader (Hi Sasha) to consider the merits of changing the voting system used in BC Elections.

One argument sometimes used against the new system is that Single Transferable Voting often leads to Minority Governments. The implication seems to be that minority governments are inherently unstable and that we’d be having elections every two weeks. Well first of all, I still want to talk to you aboot that issue we briefly discussed at Nadia’s Bday party, Sasha. Secondly, we now have fixed election dates in BC. The next election will be in 2013 no matter what happens. Finally, Andrew Steele @ The Globe and Mail provides a list of minority governments that did work, all on the federal level.

majority is no guarantee of activism.

Inertia often befalls majority governments with the lack of electoral pressure creating confusion between the urgent with the important, and between the agenda of the stakeholders and civil servants and the agenda of the public and the party.

In fact, some of the most successful government’s in Canadian history were minority governments.

Saving the Rain Forest Gives me a Boner

March 13, 2009 at 9:07 pm | Posted in environment, Personal, Videos | Leave a comment

So I have this thing of Facebook. It’s the ‘(lil) Green Patch‘ application. It’s supposed to save the rain forest. When you use it, sponsors donate money. So I use it for that reason and I think it’s fun to send virtual plants to my facebook buddies. The little plant icons are pretty cute.

After I accept a plant from someone, the application asks me if I’d like to help the other ‘(lil) Green Patch’ users on my friends list tend to their gardens by watering the grass or pulling weeds or something.

And I can’t stop laughing while I’m doing it.

I think the reason is that almost everyone on my friends list who uses this application is female and to me “little green patch” sounds vaguely like a euphemism for vagina, you know, kind of like ‘secret garden’.

Don’t these help requests sound somewhat double-entendre-ish to you:

  • Akiko’s green patch needs help. Could you help please?
  • Jhayne is working late today. Could you please help at Jhayne’s green patch?
  • Your green hands are needed at Lisa’s patch. Please could you help?
  • Drea’s green patch is being talked about. Would you like to compare notes?
  • We hear you have a green thumb. Samantha’s patch could do well with your visit.

Or do I just have a dirty mind?

And in other news, three guys who weren’t even alive in the 80s use six keyboards to combine 15 hits of the 80s. They’re really cute the way they jump around to trade off instruments.

I have a challenge for you. Don’t look at the screen while these are playing. The screen contains captions to tell you what the songs are. DON’T LOOK. Count how many songs you can name and post them in the comments section. Then watch the video again to see if you were right. I did not take this challenge because I did not think of it until after I had watched the video. I think I would have gotten five.

  • Disabled Man wins Human Rights Case against Vancouver Firm:

A Vancouver firm has been found guilty of contravening the B.C. Human Rights Code by dismissing a disabled worker in order to prevent his joining a union, which would have protected him against such arbitrary dismissal.

Apparently the thinking was, we’d better illegally fire him now, or else we won’t be able to illegally fire him later.

Today I went to see a psychiatrist. He wanted to know about my smother mother.

Actually, our conversation was pretty superficial. It was our first meeting; I’m going back next week.

So, I have a shrink. I get closer to Woody Allen everyday. Maybe I should adopt a girlfriend from Cambodia.

In other news, there is a new Depeche Mode called Wrong. It really cocks rocks.

OK, that does it. No more eating octopuses for me! Over the past year I’ve seen at least three stories of octopuses displaying a high level of intelligence. And now there’s one more from Scientific American:

“On Thursday morning, workers filing into the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in California were surprised to find 200 gallons (750 liters) of seawater soaking into their spanking new, ecologically sensitive flooring. It turns out that a curious two-spotted octopus had disassembled a water recycling valve and directed a tube to spew out of the tank for about 10 hours.”

Octopuses also have personalities

“We found there are three dimensions and we settled for names: activity, reactivity and avoidance. Avoidance is how shy you are. Activity is if you are very active or passive. And reactivity indicates whether you are very emotional or more blasé. Octopuses can have any mix of those traits.”

Maybe you’re thinking, “So what ScratchDude? Is octopus a big part of your diet? Just how big of a sacrafice is this?” But keep in mind that I will be in Japan for at least a year, and as I understand it the roads are literally paved with seafood.

And since we’re talking about not eating animals, I’ll throw down a link to another Scientific American study, How Meat Contributes to Global Warming.

update on my lack of a social life

February 27, 2009 at 2:41 am | Posted in Personal | 3 Comments

I’ve met with eight women from craigslist now. I think it’s been about six weeks since I started “dating”.

  • one was not interested in a second date
  • three were nice but I was not attracted to them
  • one actually graced me with a second date, but I haven’t heard from her in two weeks now
  • one decided that she wasn’t ready for dating right now after all
  • one was actually looking for friendship instead of a date
  • one started dating someone else
  • and one stood me up

So, in conclusion, being single sucks and trying to become unsingle sucks even more.

I can laugh about it now

February 20, 2009 at 1:37 am | Posted in Personal | Leave a comment

A friend of mine is lying in ice right now because of an allergic reactions to peanuts. She says that her skin is driving her crazy. I told her a story of a time that my skin was killing me. It’s a funny story, so I’ll share it with you as well.

I went to Wreck Beach and got a terrible sunburn on my legs. At the time I was working the night shift in a grocery store and I had to work that night. The sunburn was so bad that I couldn’t bend over. If I bent at all, the fabric from my pants would rub against my legs. I noticed that the store sold some lotion for sunburns. It was supposed to made the pain go away immediately. So I asked my coworker if he could cover for me for 15 minutes. There were only two of us in the store so we couldn’t take breaks at the same time. It was actually his time to take a break but he let me go first.

So I took this pink lotion to the employee washroom but when I opened the bottle it slipped out of my hands and the pink lotion went everywhere. It was on my uniform shirt and my pants and the walls and the floors. I had to clean it up off of the floor and walls, which meant I had to take my pants off because I had to get down on my hands and knees. Then I had to wash it off of my clothes.

I couldn’t get it out with paper towel so I had to run both my pants and shirt under the tap and they became soaked. Then I put the lotion on my legs and I had to put my wet clothes back on. All this took about 45 minutes. My workmate was calling me on the intercom to ask where I was.

I finally got back downstairs, dripping wet and took over the cash register so that my workmate could go on break. About 30 people came through in the next 15 minutes. Everyone of them asked me why I was wet. I told them that a pipe had burst because I didn’t want to tell the whole story 30 times.

And here’s the punchline:

After all that, the lotion didn’t even work!

But at least I don’t have any food allergies to worry about. Get better soon N.

Sunday, Rainy Sunday

February 1, 2009 at 6:31 pm | Posted in Personal | Leave a comment

Today, my bestest bud Carsen lead me and two ladies through a yoga routine. She’s a really good instructor and after she stretched out my loins I felt real real good.

Then I had another blind date. It was the same situation as last Sunday. She’s a really nice girl with good energy, but the physical attraction just wasn’t there.

I felt so sorry for her. We met at the Starbucks at Denman and Davie. We had talked about walking on the Seawall. I brought it up just to say that I didn’t think it was a good idea. I had a hat but she didn’t have an umbrella or a hood or anything. She was also getting over a cold.

But in spite of that, she said that she wanted to take that walk. I figured that she knew what she was getting into, but I think I was wrong. Her feet got wet and she had to blow her nose a lot. I suppose it’s my fault. If I wasn’t so gosh darn handsome and charming, women wouldn’t be willing to hurt themselves just to be in my company.

I had a blind date yesterday. We ended up talking for four hours. It broke my heart a little bit because she is so cool and I had such a good time hanging out with her, but there just wasn’t any physical attraction.

I’m considering trying to get a friendship going, but I don’t know. I don’t really like hearing the “let’s be friends” line and maybe she wouldn’t either. I guess she could always say no.

And how’s your love life doing?

Life Extension Update

July 18, 2008 at 3:08 pm | Posted in Medical, Personal | Leave a comment

As some of you may know, my long term goal in life is to not die. It’s a very long term goal. Even though achieving immortality still sounds like science fiction, it becomes more science and less fiction every year. At this point, nobody that I know of is promising an escape from aging, but there are techniques that may slow down an individual’s aging to the point where the progress of anti-aging technology catches up and surpasses it.

Before I go any further let my say that I welcome responses to this post, but I’m not particularly interested in discussing the ethics or morality of immortality and you are unlikely to sway me with any argument that it is better to biologically age after all. And also, if you’ll forgive my bluntness, if you suggest that I will be bored during my extended life span I will think of you as being very short sighted.

So …. one rather unsurprising strategy for life extension is to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Towards that end, I have adopted a caloric restricted diet. I have been practicing it for about three months now.

For breakfast, I eat fruit. My lunch is raw vegetables and hazelnuts. My usual dinner is lightly fried tofu and mushrooms with coleslaw and cherry tomatoes. I sometimes substitute in other meals such as vegetarian meatballs or chicken breasts. Don’t worry about my protein intake. I get plenty.

I am not a vegetarian, but I have sworn off livestock, dairy, and eggs; not so much for health reasons but because of the environmental aspect of the livestock industry. I still eat fish and would eat game if somebody offered me some.

My diet is not easy for me, although the difficulty isn’t what you might expect. I don’t really have much trouble resisting offers of sweets or steaks. The challenge comes from not wanting to eat all of my regular meals. Once I start eating I am satisfied with them, but before I start eating I often put off eating until I am quite hungry. When I am quite hungry I crave fattier foods. I eat too many peanut butter sandwiches.

I am currently taking resveratrol, which hypothetically may mimic the effects of caloric restriction.

I am also trying to be more active, with limited success. I am still rollerblading and I now attend an aikido class once a week. My yoga practice has stalled. I hope to start yoga again soon.

I have put quite a lot of work into improving my mental health as well. I am taking medication to combat dystimea, I am reading books about Buddhism and anger management, and I also do some meditation. There have been remarkable changes to my thoughts and feelings over the past few months.

Signing up for cryogenic storage is on my list of medium term goals. I must admit that I have been a bit lax about this. My excuse is that I am waiting for my financial situation to stabilize. The last bit of research that I did on the subject was encouraging. You don’t have to be a millionaire. You can fund you storage by making the cryogenic company a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Of course medical technology continues to advance. I am frustrated that all I can really do in that area is to sit back and wait. A while back I was excited to find a facebook group called the Vancouver Immortalists Association. I thought that perhaps I could make some contacts and find out how to be in the right place at the right time to take advantage of new technological developments. Unfortunately, nothing ever happened with that group. My search for new information and opportunities has stalled.

Perhaps you can tell that a large challenge in progressing towards this goal is keeping the momentum up. This is really the first time in a month that I’ve thought about it for more than five minutes.

So, that’s where I’m at in terms of living forever. I’ve made some good progress towards improving my chances of becoming immortal, but also have a long way to go. I think that right now, the best thing that I can do towards increasing my chances further is stabilize my life in terms of money, scheduling, and my living situation.

Live long and prosper.

They were about four inches across. It was really cool.

There’s a Word for It

June 1, 2008 at 12:19 am | Posted in Medical, Personal | 5 Comments

A post on Facebook by galaxychild let me to find that there are other people in the world that have had similar experiences as me when it comes to Anosmia, the lack of olfaction, or an absence of the ability to smell. It can be either temporary or permanent.

Now I suppose that the term anosmia doesn’t actually apply to me. I used to have a reduced sense of smell. It turns out that there’s also a word for that – hyposmia. It seems that the condition has passed for me.

But anyways, GC’s post led me to find a forum where people wrote about common reactions that I have also been on the receiving end of. For example:

– when you say you can’t smell anything, what does that mean?
– so you can’t smell [thing]; how about [other thing], how about [third thing], ad infinitum ….
– how do you breathe

and the classic

– how do you taste? (with my tongue, thank you)

And unfortunately, a fair amount of disbelief and even anger.

I’m sorry I can’t smell your perfume; please forgive me.
